The novella was the most widespread genre during the French Renaissance. It was a reflection of the eventful historical period, when one world was withering away and another one was born. The anthology features works written during the 15th and 16th centuries. It includes two anonymous pieces, as well as pieces by Nicholas de Troyes, Bonaventure de Perie and Philipe de Vignol Some of the plots greatly resemble the oral tradition and folklore, while others seem to have been influenced by the literary tradition.
