Russia, the summer of 1856. Alexei, the non-submissive son of Maria Karpovna, a widow of still outstanding beauty, comes back after a long absence to the family estate, which his mother governs with unchallenged authority. Maria is willing to do everything in order to keep Alexei in submission and to marry him to Agata, her unseemly ex-companion. Alexei refuses and in the final count his brother, an apathetic hypocrite, accepts the marriage. The different trials and tribulations in the course of the incessant family wars help Henri Troyat outline the characters. The solution is unexpected but completely corresponding to the logic of the story and leading to the end of this short, but overloaded and entertaining novel.
